OhioRiverPottery.com -- An American Dinnerware Identification Web Site

This trade ad for Anita Glazes shows the Virginia shape. It was originially called "Bilmer" but the name was later changed. The following is an excerpt from a 1938 article on Bilmer:

The new shapes is called "Bilmer" and it features square
corners in the service hollow ware. ...the covered dish
and the sugar and creamer are distinctly different. In
the flat ware, the found shape has been followed but with
the elimination of the outstanding shoulder.

Becuase of its lines, the "Bilmer" permits of unusual
decorative treatments. ...In its popular "Shell Crest"
dinnerware, the Paden City Pottery Co. broke away from
the conventional. In the "Bilmer" this pottery goes a
step farther with a shape reminiscent fo the so-called
"square" shapes so popular 15 and more years ago.

There is also originiality in the name "Bilmer." for
particulars on this, the trade is referred to Merrill
C. Sondles, vice president, and to J. W. ("Bill") Mackey,
the sales manager.

Besides the solid color Anita Glazes, Virginia was also
made in an ivory body with decals.
