_____Collectors of Homer Laughlin decaled dinnerware are very familiar with the date code found on many of the HLC backstamps. (For an explanation of the letters and numbers, see the table on this page: Date Code.)

_____The first letter represents the month. That is, “A” is for January, “B” is for February and so on. Some have noticed the letter “M” being used -- the 13th letter of the alphabet. This leads to the conclusion that the letter “I” was not used to represent a month in the date code. The Virginia Rose backstamps below show just which letters were used.

_____At least two collectors have told me they've seen the letter “I” in early HLC backstamps. If that is the case, its possible the letter “I” was used for a breif period of time and then abandoned since the letter “I” can be confused for the number “1.”

_____For Virginia Rose collectors: Notice the “H” backstamp. This 1966 marking indicates the piece was made in plant 4. 1966 Virginia Rose is the only year (at least to my knowledge) that has the plant 4 number. All other dates have plant 8.
